Taking cuttings and preparing plant cuttings for propagation

Cuttings of Cineraria geifolia and Osteospermum moniliferum

  • Cuttings are best collected during the cool hours of the day.
  • Always collect cuttings from a healthy plant (disease and pest free).
  • Ensure that your secateurs are sterilised before cutting your plant material.
  • Placing your cuttings in a plastic bag with a little water will keep them fresh and moist.
  • Succulents should be allowed to calluses and not be stored in a plastic bag because this can cause rot.
  • The cuttings should be made in a clean, sterile area.
  • Cutting should be 10–14 cm longer if working with a big plant.
  • A clean-cut below the node can prevent disease and rot. Be sure not to use blunt secateurs to avoid jagged ends.
  • Remove bottom leaves and buds before inserting the stem (cutting) into the media.
  • Leave two pairs of leaves after removing the top young leaves.
  • Dip cutting into rooting hormone before inserting into the media.
  • Use a clean, thick stem or an old pencil to open holes in the media to insert the cutting on the cuttings, avoiding pushing the cuttings directly into the media.
